IR-1: Understanding the Immediate Relative Spouse Visa
Let us help you with your IR-1 spouse visa, including eligibility, required documents, processing steps, and what to expect when immigrating to the United States as the spouse of a U.S. citizen.
What Is an IR-1 Visa?
The IR-1 visa is an immigrant visa available to the eligible spouse of a U.S. citizen.
The letters IR stand for Immediate Relative.
Unlike the CR-1 visa, which generally applies to marriages that are less than two years old when permanent resident status is granted, the IR-1 visa generally applies when the marriage has existed for at least two years at the time the immigrant spouse is admitted to the United States as a lawful permanent resident.
This distinction is important because eligible IR-1 visa holders generally receive lawful permanent resident status without conditions, eliminating the need to later file a petition to remove conditions on residence.
